MANY people say that horror films are over. Yes there has indeed been lots and lots of crap in this genre (especially over the last few years). I, however, am making it easy for you. These are, in my opinion, the best of the best of horror. It will start with 2011 and go down from there- year by year with the best and #1 of each year as well. It also has the worst horror film from each year between 1970- 2011. The best goes from 2011 down to 1920. There is a top 10 until we pass 1970 and then less.

:death:

TABLE OF CONTENTS
PAGE 1---2011- 2002
PAGE 2---2001- 1984
PAGE 3---1983- 1970
PAGE 4 to PAGE 7---COMMENTS
PAGE 8---1969- 1950
PAGE 9---1949-1920, Final Tally Of All Listed Together

I HOPE YOU ENJOY!

Horror movies are a huge passion of mine and the very best are in this list. If I see things that change my mind along the way I will update. This, however, was done as the result of alot of research of what was in each year that I had seen and I have seen ALOT of horror films in my day.

IMO, some of the horror movies released now that are considered crap (not all, but some), may age pretty well and become cult classics. Cult classics make for the best horror movies.

Like Return of the Living Dead

Yeah, you're spot on there Sarina!
In fact, it's often the ones that DON'T hold up so well that end up being favorites of mine. Like, if they have shitty effects and make-up and all that.

I think if I watched it in any other state than sober, I'd go into shock when Tar Man appears.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN

This supsenseful nightmare had more uncomfortable moments on an emotional level than most could take. Tilda Swinton plays the never-wanted-to-be mother of a truly evil child who manipulates her torture from the day he come out of her. Very memorable movie!

Runnerups:

2. A Serbian Film- Very disturbing delve into human depravity and its depths.
Image
3. Martha Marcy May Marlene- One of the most interesting movies of the year. Some moments of this film are scarier than any other. It concerns a woman trying to flee a cult.
Image
4. Scream 4- I loved this thoroughly. Very timely and quite needed.
Image
5. I Saw The Devil- Haunting revenge tale.
Image
6. Attack The Block- Too much friggin fun!
Image
7. The Skin I Live In- Almodovar goes interesting places with this one I just saw today.
Image
8. Red State- Kevin Smith does alright with horror. Michael Parks is memorable.
Image
9. Insiduous- Lin Shaye goes a long way.
Image
10. (TIE) Contagion- Frightening sci fi disease film with top-notch cast. Places lower because of chart its on.
Image
10. (TIE) Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil- Comedy/horror fun. More of a comedy.
Image
10. (TIE) Outcast- Witches are the focus of this one which has some unforgettable haunting imagery.
Image

Other Notables- The Woman, Grave Encounters, Human Centipede 2, Fright Night 2011, Hobo With A Shotgun, Paranormal Acitivity 3 and KABOOM

WORST HORROR OF YEAR- Red Riding Hood
Image
Maybe one of the biggest costume design fails ever with the time period its supposed to take place in! And everyone looks like they just walked out of a make up trailer. More "lets cash in on Twilight" fodder!

FINALLY. Jesus Christ, life stuff is important but this is more important.

I didn't really like I Saw The Devil, horror movies are supposed to entertain me! :c
Scream 4 was my favorite Scream so that ftw. and Contagion was excellent but not really horror-y?

2010

WINNER

ENTER THE VOID- This movie is one terrifying journey! This movie will play with your mind in the most uncomfortable ways. It is about a junkie who overdoses and then proceeds to float as a spirit around Tokyo, checking in on his sister and other things. It also goes some very disturbing places!! The beginning has a warning for people who have seizures. Impressive and frightening- if not an easy experience.

RUNNERUPS

2. Buried- One of the most underrated movies and performances of 2010. Alot of people avoid this movie thinking how can you be entertained inside a box during a film. YOU WILL BE ENTERTAINED I promise!
Image
3. Piranha 3D- This film gave me such horror fan joy and a great 3D bloodbath!!
Image
4. Machete- Danny Trejo is awesome in this fun-as-fuck movie based on the Grindhouse fake trailer from the 2007 movie.
Image
5. Frozen- Surprisingly effective "I'm stuck somewhere and cant get out" film.
Image
6. I Spit On Your Grave (2010)- A very effective remake of a classic with new twists.
Image
7. Let Me In- Another good remake but nowhere near the original.
Image
8. The Killer Inside Me- Is a West Texas Sheriff a psycho? This movie offers an interesting argument.
Image
9. The Last Exorcism- Despite a weak ending, It has its moments.
Image
10. Survival Of The Dead- George Romero still gives us interesting zombie flicks.
Image

(Other notables are Devil, Splice, Daybreakers, Legion, After.Life, The Crazies remake and the predictable but alright Shutter Island)

(Also notable is the disgusting The Human Centipede- which unfortunately has piss poor acting. However, what this movie makes you do is imagine the WORST)

(I also must mention THE SCENE in 127 Hours. Its not a horror film which is why it isnt on this list but the scene he cuts his arm off is a rough one)

(This year had the WORST remake ever in A Nightmare On Elm Street- HATED IT)
WORST OF YEAR- A Nightmare On Elm Street

Scream 4 made me happy too. redeemed the terrible Scream 3. I Saw The Devil was quite scary to me.

2009

WINNER

Image

TRICK R TREAT- One of the few films in years that re-invigorated my love for the classic horrortelling style. Cant brag on this one enough!

RUNNERUPS:

2. Zombieland- A better movie overall but its so comedic I couldnt give it #1. A fantastic movie though
Image
3. Orphan- Very effective performances in this suspense Bad Seed movie with genuinely surprising ending.
Image
4. House Of The Devil- A great suspense tale. Good performances. Creepy.
Image
5. Dead Girl- This one gets in your head, disturbs you, plays around and stays in your subconscious.
Image
6. Paranormal Activity- I think it works on a genuine level though its way overhyped.
Image
7. Pontypool- What a creative interesting film that I'm glad my brother told me about. Good ideas here!
Image
8. (TIE) Drag Me To Hell- Sam Raimi has some fun..and I liked it alot.
Image
8. (TIE) The Road- A creepy atmospheric film. Viggo Mortensen is great.
Image
9. The Last House On The Left- A surprisingly good remake though not near as effective as original.
Image
10. Carriers- Surprisingly effective little film to check out. Chris Pine is great. Very entertaining.
Image

HONORABLE MENTION-
Image
ThanksKilling- Rarely have I laughed as hard as this made me laugh in its unapologetic silliness. Not a great movie but VERY FUNNY!

Other Notables- Dead Snow, Antichrist, Grace, Surveillance, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (gory fun), The Box (good ideas not always well executed), My Bloody Valentine remake and REC

(In terms of the Friday the 13th remake, I think it had a great opening and I loved the asian guy but when Jason ran, I checked out and could not place it!! Some things are unforgiveable)

Oh and before I get hate, I think "Martyrs" was a wildly overrated piece of crap! I had it as worst until I remembered the horrible piece of shit New Moon.

Worst Of Year- Twilight: The New Moon- The rest of them are made honorably though I still don't care for them. However, this one is so bad I was amazed it wasn't included in the worst movies ever and Kristen Stewarts performance alone is embrassing enough to make you cringe.

WINNER

Image

Let The Right One In- Far superior to its American remake, this one chills to the bone and touches you also. Very meaningful foreign language film.

RUNNERUPS:

2. The Strangers- A Very effective creepy horror film. Not giving my answer here would be more effective for the movie though. :)
Image
3. Baby Blues- This one disturbed me alot and its about a mother going crazy on her kids.
Image
4. Cloverfield- Effective at what it does. The better of the documentary-feel horror films.
Image
5. Otis- Alot of sick fun in this horror comedy.
Image
6. Teeth- Creative, sick little movie. I mean A VAGINA WITH TEETH for Christ's sake!
Image
7. Eden Lake- Some good ideas make this decent indeed. Michael Fassbender helps too.
Image
8. Midnight Meat Train- Creepy and effective.
Image
9. Funny Games- A good remake of the 97 classic. Naomi Watts helps it along well. It is nearly a scene-for-scene remake with different actors. YOU SHOULD SEE THE ORIGINAL. However, if you dont like subtitles, this is good too.
Image
10. The Happening- Despite where this movie doesn't succeed, I think there are areas that it does succeed in creepiness- especially its deaths. This is a classic case of good ideas and atmosphere marred by silliness.
Image

(Also notable is Repo! The Genetic Opera- Fun horror opera musical)
(Also notable is Donkey Punch, Philosophy Of A Knife, Midnight Movie, Quarantine, Zombie Strippers, The Ruins, The Prom Night remake, One Eyed Monster (where Ron Jeremys Penis Kills) and Splinter)

( Im not going to mention Twilight or the HORRIBLE One Missed Call)

WORST OF THE YEAR- Kitchen Priveledges (horrid)
Image
Not even the great Peter Saarsgard could save this misconceived bullshit.

2007

WINNER

Image

GRINDHOUSE- One of the best movie experiences of my life seeing these together in drive in form. Not really scary movies so much as awesome horror. This was a fun year and nothing was even half as fun as seeing this. Love the fake trailers!!!

RUNNERUPS:

2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street- An excellent horror movie musical I cannot get enough of.
Image
3. Rob Zombie's Halloween- A Carefully made horror remake that works really well I think. Daeg Faerch as young Michael Myers is unforgettable.
Image
4. Zodiac- Very involving awesome film that is one of the best of the year. It would be #2 if it were a different category.
Image
5. Fido- Creative fucked up fun. Loved it
Image
6. Hostel Part 2- More disturbing fun from Eli Roth. I loved the sequel though some did not. I like that Eli Roth understands how to make a classic slasher.
Image
7. Bug- This movie will make your brain itch!!! Michael Shannon is Oscar worthy! DEFINETLY not one you will forget!
Image
8. I Am Legend- Will Smith does well with this book adaptation that is pretty damn good.
Image
9. (TIE) Disturbia- This was a good Hollywood suspense flick! You know this story WELL from other movies but its done well here.
Image
9. (TIE) The Girl Next Door- Unforgettable true story of cruelty. Blanche Baker is amazing. Another film 'An American Crime" was made later with Catherine Keener and Ellen Page that is nowhere near as good as this one. Not a comfortable watch.
Image
10. Hatchet- Felt like an 80s horror film and I liked that.
Image

HONORABLE MENTION
Image
JOSHUA- A good movie with an awesome original song "The Fly" from Dave Matthews. Had to single out.

(Honorable mentions for 28 Weeks Later, Inside and THEM- a french horror film I enjoyed)
(Also notable- the ridiculous fun of Black Sheep, 1408, The Orphanage, Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, The Hitcher remake, P2, The Invasion, Shrooms, The Wizard Of Gore remake, The Reaping, Sublime and 30 Days Of Night)

I felt The Mist overrated with a shitty ending though that betrayed its characters in favor to surprise which made me not place it just from how much I disagreed with character motivation here- though Marcia Gay Hardens death was fun.

WORST OF YEAR- Knock Knock

PAN'S LABYRINTH- One of the very best movies of the decade! This haunting, terrifying movie has some of the scariest moments of the decade for sure. It is one warped fairy tale with a decidely realistic ending.

RUNNERUPS:

2. Hostel- Eli Roth gave us this violent little masterpiece that satsifies. Very effective movie!
Image
3. The Descent- This horror film has so much atmosphere you may feel smothered by it. Good stuff!
Image
4. 2001 Maniacs- So much fun is this politically incorrect horror flick based on the Herschell Gordon Lewis classic. I have an unnatural obsession for the Hucklebilly character pictured below.
Image
5. Feed- A creepy, disturbing film about a man forcefeeding women to death. Very sick!
Image
6. Slither- Old fashioned horror fun turned on its head.
Image
7. The Hills Have Eyes- A very good remake of a horror film. Very notable.
Image
8. Hard Candy- This is a fantastic drama with an Oscar worthy performance from Ellen Page. Some call it horror so Im ranking it where I would as horror. It is better ranked as a disturbing drama.
Image
9. Mortuary- Surprisingly good little independent horror film. Good cast- especially Dan Byrd. Has surprise element to it.
Image
10. The Host- Some very memorable moments if some being quite borrowed. Its a monster movie for the modern day.
Image

Other notables are: The Tripper  The Abandoned, Feast (good opening that goes downhill after sadly but worth it for cast), Jimmy and Judy, Evil Bong, Turistas, An American Haunting, Black Christmas, Automaton Transfusion, Final Destination 3, Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead, Snakes on a Plane and the nude on the bed scene in Borat LOL that was scary

Worst-
(There were so many bad ones- I also want to mention the crappiness of When A Stranger Calls remake, Simon Says and Creepshow 3 but the worst are below- still a tie)

(TIE)
Five Across The Eyes- Unbelievably bad. It has to be seen to be believed how bad.
Image
&
The Wicker Man- What a bad remake. Who the fuck thought this would be good??

THE DEVILS REJECTS- What a gorgoeus, sadistic ode to 70s horror. I adore this movie. Though Wolf Creek was scarier, this is the better horror film.

RUNNERUPS:

2. Wolf Creek- Very disturbing movie with little hope and alot of cruelty. John Jaratt is amazing.
Image
3. High Tension- Though deeply flawed but whats effective is DAMN effective. The ending, however, is huge misfire.
Image
4. Cache- A suspenseful movie that leaves you very uneasy right until the debated ending.
Image
5. King Kong- Peter Jacksons affectionate remake boasts a great Naomi Watts performance.
Image
6. The Skeleton Key- Some didnt like this but I loved this suspenseful flick with Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands.
Image
7. The Jacket- This one will get in your head.
Image
8. Murder Set Pieces- Mesmerizingly sick film! Took me a second watch to understand its power.
Image
9. Boy Eats Girl- Cute little odd horror film.
Image
10. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose- Mismarketed but has its moments- especially in Jennifer Carpenter.
Image

ALSO Before anyone asks I dont see Sin City as horror- just awesome science fiction/Fantasy/action!! Red Eye is also a great action film but not horror!

Other Notables- The Manson Family, House Of Wax (loved Paris Hiltons death) The Dark Hours, Saw 2, The Card Player, Cruel World, The Gingerdead Man (Gary Busey!), Pervert!, Return Of The Living Dead 4 and 5

(I want to make a small mention for the opening sequence of Santa's Slay which lets you see Fran Drescher, Chris Kattan and other surprise choices get hacked to bits by Santa. Great opener! Sadly though the movie goes WAY downhill from there which is why it isnt included..despite very hilariously wicked opening sequence. That sequence is worth the rental alone though.)

(I also want to mention THE SCORNED- very bad but notable for past reality show stars (mainly from Survivor) being killed off. JD might appreciate especially.)

WORST OF THE YEAR- The BTK KILLER- WORST MOVIE IN EXISTENCE! #1

2010- Haven't seen any of those. :/
2009- Trick R Treat was great
2008- Let The Right One In is one of the all time best! Enjoyed Cloverfield

You must see Buried. The film was Buried because of 127 Hours success and some people thought they would be too similar. Its an awesome film though. Glad you liked the other 2 here.

Shaun Of The Dead- Yes its a comedy. No matter though- it is still a horror film by all means and the best one of that year- though it isnt scary.

RUNNERUPS:

2. Open Water- Few films develop a scary suspense as this one does.
Image
3. Saw- Effective movie that started a franchise. Very violent, good fun.
Image
4. Three..Extremes- Some unforgettable imagery in this twisted trilogy.
Image
5. Survive Style +5- This wild mental breakdown movie is definetly worth a look. This one takes connecting stories to whole new places. lol
Image
6. Dead And Breakfast- Horror with original songs- which make this film completely.
Image
7. Secret Window- Johnny Depp and Stephen King literature meet. Effective stuff.
Image
8. Seed Of Chucky- Its a guilty pleasure but so much fun. John Waters has fun cameo.
Image
9. The Village- Though the movie makes some mistakes, I think it has good performances, atmsophere and gets an unfair rep.
Image
10. (TIE) Zombie Honeymoon- Sad, creepy little romance??
Image
10. (TIE) Malevolence- Underrated little horror film.
Image

(Before you ask- I thought Godsend was HORRIBLE and The Dawn Of The Dead remake made me angry despite a good opening)

(Other notables for year- Aliens Vs. Predator, Exorcist: The Beginning, The Grudge, The Hazing, Madhouse, Shallow Ground, Riding The Bullet, Tales From The Crapper, Van Helsing and Suburban Nightmare)

WORST OF THE YEAR- The Hollow (Nick Carter is in it and DOESNT die. If youre watching to see him die, dont bother. He lives!)

MAY- A truly good psychological horror film that is also quite touching and impossible to ignore. It also boasts an amazing lead performance from Angela Bettis. Also one of the ONLY horror films of this decade that was on many top 10 lists of critics that year.

TIES WITH

Image

CABIN FEVER- I had to tie them because this was such an innovative horror film and gave us Eli Roth- who is invaluable to this genre I think. Robert Harris as the old man in the general store is ever memorable and the songs from "The Last House On The Left" add to the proceedings nicely.

RUNNERUPS:

2. House of 1000 Corpses- Rob Zombie arrived with this fun horror film with Sid Haig stealing the show.
Image
3. Identity- What an awesome little flick this was! So twisty..
Image
4. Freddy Vs. Jason- Was good to see this finally happen.
Image
5. Bubba Ho Tep- Lots of good fun. Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis dont disappoint.
Image
6. A Tale Of Two Sisters- Creepy fun this one has, if flawed.
Image
7. Ju-On- Better than The Grudge!
Image
8. Wrong Turn- Surprisingly good I thought. Exaggerated southern fear tale but has moments of genuine suspense.
Image
9. Final Destination 2- Fun deaths and a great opener which I still think about when I am driving behind a log truck.
Image
10. Willard- Crispin Glover is mesmerizing in this movie.
Image

(Before anyone asks, I HATED The Texas Chainsaw remake.)( There is also a movie called August Underground: Mordum which is just disturbing-as-fuck schlock. Not worthy of horror chart)

(Also noteworthy is Beyond Re-Animator, Blood Sisters, and Scary Movie 3)

(August Underground Mordum is disgusting and disturbing but not something Id reccommend)

WORST OF THE YEAR-
House Of The Dead
Image
One of the worst films ever made!!

FRAILTY- An uncompromising film that left me thinking for months after viewing. I know the whole world will pick 'The Ring" instead but aside from her jumping out of the tv, the movie didnt spook me nearly as much. However, this one was very real and very shattering. Bill Paxton will haunt you!

RUNNERUPS:

2. The Ring- That girl in the TV goes a long way in this creeper which delivers.
Image
3. 28 Days Later- A wonderful zombie film that stays with you.
Image
4. Signs- I loved this Shama-lama-ding-dong venture. Genuine moments.
Image
5. Dog Soldiers- This was one creative werewolf tale.
Image
6. Eight Legged Freaks- Fun classic horror/comedy fun with David Arquette.
Image
7. Ted Bundy- One of the best of the adaptations of serial killer movies that were around at that time. Worth the watch.
Image
8. Irreversible- Appropriate name for a horror film that is just that on your psyche.
Image
9. In My Skin- A woman starts to abuse her own body after she becomes fascinated with it.
Image
10. The Mothman Prophecies- Underrated film that resonates well starring Richard Gere. Dont miss this one!
Image

Honorable Mentions- Rose Red, Below, Queen Of The Damned, The Carrie remake, The Eye, Panic Room

(Also note that Jeremy Renner is fantastic in Dahmer- though its not scary. And Dark Water was OVERRATED. Ichi The Killer is worth a mention as well for its disturbingness. I also enjoy the beginning of Ghost Ship but not the rest of it really!)

WORST OF THE YEAR- Nine Lives- Paris Hilton is in this. What more do I need to say?
