OK I just read the first issue.
It's pretty damn interesting. I'd say more interesting than Buffy season 8.
I have one main issue with the comic continuations of Buffy and Angel...and that's the fact that I just don't think either show would have gone in the direction of the comic books, mostly because of budget issues, but still. Giant Dawn? Lots of close-ups of the dragon? Nah. Never would have happened on TV.
But whatever.
I agree about it being more interesting than Buffy season 8. I really like the direction that they're taking it. I love the darker style and feel of the story so far, and how they're showing how things have changed since the finale.
I also agree with you when you say that the comics aren't really like what they'd have for the seasons on TV, especially for Buffy. For this one, while I don't think they'd quite go this direction with the apocolypse, I can easily imagine how it could have been done if that was they way they took it. The only thing that I think is stretching it is the dragon, but overall, at least for this first comic, it is pretty close to what I'd imagine after the last scene in Angel. In fact I think I prefer this way to whatever cheap explanation they'd come up with to explain how they got out of that final fight that the last scene hinted at.
Anyway, I really liked this one a lot, especially considering it was the first comic in the series. I have a feeling that I'm going to have to re-adjust my ratings for these Angel comics as compared to the Buffy ones, to compensate for a higher standard (even though I do like those comics), but for now I'm rating this one 4 stars.
